ROSES

Rose List for 2008

We are pleased to present our customers with a superior selection of roses. These come to us from the premier rose growers in the United States...Weeks, Jackson & Perkins, Meilland-Star, David Austin, and Edmunds.

Our rose varieties are presented in the following manner:

Cultivar Name numerical ratings, color, our comments, bush height, and resistance to mildew, (supplier photo)

(*) before the name indicates a rose we are offering for the first time.

Ratings We normally list the American Rose Society’s national rating. Roses are scored from 0 to 10, 10 being perfect. Ratings are based on color, fragrance, form, lasting quality, disease resistance, and abundance of bloom. Roses grown locally will probably score differently than the national average, however, a rose with a national rating of 8 or higher is a virtual guarantee of superior performance. Most new and obscure roses have not yet been rated. Ratings within ( )’s are our own opinions, based on local conditions, if significantly different from the national rating.

Mildew is the single most serious local disease. Resistance to this disease is an important factor when selecting roses. No rose is totally immune. There is a certain point during the growth cycle of rose foliage when overcast weather can cause mildew on even the most resistant varieties. Roses rated MR=A are least likely to get mildew. Roses rated MR=C will get mildew every year. MR=? means we have no clue.

Be aware that rose colors change during different weather conditions and that some photos are not accurate.

Exhibition Roses are favorites for cutting and rose shows. They have classic blooms with spirally arranged petals tightly wound in a high center, while the outer petals are wide open and slightly reflexed. The stems are long and straight.

Rose fragrance is difficult to quantify. Fragrance is normally strongest on a sunny day with little air movement and moderate temperatures. Be aware that old noses don’t detect fragrances as well as younger noses.

Good Garden Roses are those that make a spectacular display in the landscape, bloom constantly, and are easy to grow.

It is rare, and choice, when a good exhibition rose is also a good garden rose.

See our Rose Care guide for tips on growing roses.

Hybrid Tea & gGrandiflora

The hybrid tea rose is the most popular form of the modern rose. It is the usual source of the classic, single-stem cut rose flowers. It is a bush with upright stems, each topped with a single flower. Most hybrid tea plants can also produce multiple flowers per stem when extremely vigorous. These extra buds should be removed (when first noticed) for best flower quality (disbudding). A few varieties which require extensive disbudding (undesirable) are noted. The flowers are at least 3 inches in diameter. Growth and flowering occurs year round. The average hybrid tea repeats its bloom every 6 weeks, grows in a vase shape 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide.

The grandiflora rose is similar to the hybrid tea rose except that the upright stems normally have, and look best with, 3-5 blooms each. In the following list the grandiflora varieties are preceded by a small “g”.

Tree Roses

Tree roses are merely bush roses grafted to the top of a tall straight rose stem. The relative height and other characteristics of each tree rose are closely related to the characteristics of the original rose bush from which the tree was created. (i.e.: grandiflora rose trees will usually be taller than floribunda rose trees, etc.) More information about each variety can be found by looking up the rose in the division listed after the name. For your convenience the color is also listed here. Tree roses with smaller, but more numerous, flowers make a superior show in the garden. All tree roses require a very strong stake for support. Tree roses are not tall enough to grow roses, other than miniatures, underneath them.
