Clematis is generally
regarded as the Queen of flowering vines. Pinwheel-like
flowers, up to 10” across, are suspended from delicate
stems above the airy foliage.
Colors available are purple, blue, red, rose, pink,
mauve, cream, white and many blends of the above. Unfortunately
Clematis has acquired a “spoiled princess” reputation
for requiring “rich” soil and constant pampering with no
guarantee of results.
Typically, Clematis vines we purchased from wholesale
growers in 1 gallon, 2 gallon or 5 gallon sizes would look
good during spring but by mid-summer suffer from leaf-tip
burning and an off-green color of the foliage. Die back (wilt) of
entire branches was also common. In previous years we
had attributed these symptoms to improper irrigation, too
much sun, and the heat generated in black plastic nursery
pots.
We have observed leaf-tip burn and off-green foliage
in many other plants and have determined the condition to be
due to the presence of wood or bark compost in the growing
medium. (Peat
moss has been used successfully as a part of good growing
mediums for over 50 years, but in recent years wood shavings
and ground fir bark have become a major part of nearly all
growing mediums. This
we believe to be a major problem.) Eliminating the
compost from the soil and placing it back on the surface
where it belongs has improved the appearance and vigor of
many of our plants. We
observed the similar results with Clematis.
We prefer selling Clematis plants in small (3.5”)
containers because the plant doesn’t come with a lot of
bad soil. Put a
small Clematis plant in perfect soil and you’ll get a
healthy, vigorous plant before summer! Our customers will
get good results in our Acid Mix (either in pots or in the ground) or even better
results when our
Acid Mix is mixed with
sand about 1:1. Just remember that Clematis is the first
choice on a snail’s menu.
Without protection they can disappear the first
night.
We currently have over 30
varieties of Clematis in 3.5” pots. Expect these
Clematis to bloom and grow 2-4 feet this year.
