Hidden Gem | LAGUNA HILLS NURSERY

The value of a local, family-owned nursery that grows many of its own plants is obvious to customers of Laguna Hills Nursery.

For example, while most other nurseries have stopped selling bare-root roses and bare-root fruit trees, Laguna Hills Nursery continues to offer them because, according to co-owner Nancy Matsuoka, the nursery can keep a larger selection of both and offer them at lower prices. They're also easier for customers to plant and have a better survival rate than potted versions, she said.

Other things that make this nursery a favorite among savvy gardeners include co-owner Gary Matsuoka's proprietary potting-soil mix, formulated to keeps plants healthy permanently rather than in the short term; and the store's unusually large selection of fruit trees. Gary Matsuoka teaches customers the secrets of gardening, especially in managing fruit trees in small yards.

But Matsuoka knows a lot about growing all kinds of plants in Orange County. His parents founded Laguna Hills Nursery 37 years ago, and he is so respected for his gardening expertise that he often guest-hosts the "Garden Compass" radio show and is a frequent speaker at local garden clubs.
